Marion Busby

Honors and Awards

Marion Busby was born in Spur, Texas in 1919. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Baylor University, and his Master of Music degree from Texas A & I University.

His teaching career started at Lockhart, Texas in 1940. He then moved to San Benito where he directed the high school band for three years. While there he founded and organized the Pigskin Jubilee Marching Contest for the Valley bands.

He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1945.

He spent one year with Southern Music Co. of San Antonio, and then returned to teaching.

In 1946 he became Director of Bands at Taft High School in Taft, Texas and remained there for 10 years. During his tenure, his bands received consistent First Divisions in every category. It has been said that when the Taft High School band traveled, schools had to be closed, because virtually every person in school was in the band.

In 1956 he moved to Weslaco, Texas. His Weslaco High School bands were twice named Honor Band by TMEA, and on four different occasions at the Buccaneer Days Music Festival they were named Outstanding 3A Band.

Marion Busby, was Director of Bands at Del Mar College from 1963 to 1967.

In 1967, he became the Supervisor of Music for the Corpus Christi schools until his death in 1970.

Marion Busby was President of TBA in 1953-54. He was posthumously awarded Bandmaster of the Year in 1977. His picture with his baritone appeared in the original Victor Band Method Book as an example for correct posture.

Joe Garcia

Joe Garcia began his teaching career in January of 1969 under W.R. Snavely in Harlingen, Texas.  In the summer of 1969 he was hired by Bryce Taylor to teach in Alice.  During the 1970s and 1980s, Joe Garcia established a reputation for high musical standards earning consistent first divisions with his bands.

 

At the retirement of Bryce Taylor, Joe Garcia was appointed to the position of Director of Music Education for Alice I.S.D. where he continued to develop the Alice Band Program.  Under Joe's leadeship, a new Fine Arts Complex was added to Alice High School in 1995.  Joe continued at the helm in Alice through the retirement of his longtime friend, Robert Quick.  Joe Garcia's contribution to music education and bands as a mentor and counselor to young music teachers in Region XIV since 1969 have been immeasurable.

Edgardo Bueno

Edgardo Bueno was born and raised in Laredo, Texas.  He received his basic education as a student of the Laredo Independent School District.  In 1955, he enrolled at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas where after four years, he received a Bachelor of Music Degree.  He later enrolled at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where he received a Masters of Music Education Degree.  In 1973, he received a Certificate of School Administration from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas.

He initiated his career as a band direcgtor at Carrizozo, New Mexico in 1959-61.  His band was presented with the Sweepstakes Award both years.  In 1961-63 while employed at La Joya, Texas, his bands produced First Division Ratings in Marching and Sightreading.  In 1963-64, he was Assistant Band Director at Rio Grande City, Texas.  In 1964-76, he was Assistant Band Director at J.W. Nixon High School.  In 1967-74, he was named Band Director at J.W. Nixon High School where he set the standard in instrumental music by receiving the First Sweepstakes Award at Nixon High School.  The J.W. Nixon H.S. Band would be well represented annually by having students selected to All-District, All-Region, All-Area, and All-State Band.  A large amount of First Division Medals were aqarded annually at Solo & Ensemble Contests.

He was Band Chairman for The State Fair of Texas in 1969.  He was elected Band Chairman for Music Region XIV in 1970-71.

His studies at North Texas State University made it possible to have one of his term papers published in the Southwestern Musician.  It was based on the selection of Solo material, sponsored by Dr. Knepper in 1968.

In 1969, he composed and wrote the Alma Mater for J.W. Nixon High School.

Happily retired, he is married to Virginia Bueno and are the proud parents of four children.
